This Study compares compliment responses made by Japanese students and middle-aged people. Disparity of the average age between the two groups is about 23 years. They (24 students and 17 middle-aged) responded to written compliments in a questionnaire. Data including 139 strategies in total were analyzed for their frequency in use. Consequently some defferences in their compliment responses were found between the two groups: the students tended to use more formulated strategies and the middle-aged tended to make more excuses. The author hopes that this paper provides a basis for further studies of Japanese compliments which take disparity of age into consideration.
