We analyzed overall differences in the Cultural View of Self (Markus & Kitayama [1991]) of Japanese and Swedish people in joint comparative research (Otsuka, Akiyama, Mori and Hoshino [2011b]). In this paper, we looked closer at age differences in particular. On the whole, we found that age has much more of an impact in Japan than in Sweden. Japanese students have far less self-esteem and interpersonal trust than adults and are far more sensitive to other people's feelings and their evaluation of themselves. According to cluster analysis, Japanese college students fell into four distinct groups.
