Career development among the elderly age 65 and over is not necessarily explained fully by the theory of career stages (which divides career development into several stages based on age) in contrast to other age groups. The Japanese population is rapidly aging, so research career development among the elderly is crucial. The current study conducted an online survey of 1,000 individuals ages 41 to 70 years. The survey asked about “career adaptability,” which is one component of career development. Career adaptability is contingent upon “flexibility” which refers to an openness to new experiences or changes in one's career. “Planning” refers to planned approach to one's career. Results indicated that individuals in their 40s or 50s. Results also indicated that “flexibility” and “planning” led to greater diversity of routine roles.
