The current paper examines L1 phonological transfer observed in Japanese students' English pronunciation. Firstly, persistence of excessive dependency on L1 phonology is revealed. Secondly, the cause for excessive dependency is attributed to the use of katakana as reading aid for English study. Many dictionaries and reference books for beginning level students introduce English sounds by means of katakana. Students are likely to get accustomed to substituting English sounds for kanakana. The prolonged L1 transfer can have negative effects on other language skills such as listening and reading. Several researches to support the idea are introduced. Finally, suggestions for improving pronunciation instruction for Japanese students are discussed.
