The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of career intentions as a factor governing the degree of satisfaction and spirituality of the elderly. Nine hundred individuals ranging in age from 55 to 88 years old were surveyed nationwide. Results of multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the career intentions of the elderly contributed significantly to mental satisfaction and mental stability. Moreover, results revealed that continued engagement had a more positive effect on spirituality than did disengagement. Thus, results revealed that actions such as “disengagement,”“withdrawal” and “retirement” were unable to adequately describe the career intentions of the elderly. This paper discusses how pursuing a meaningful career is necessary for the elderly and the rest of society as well.
