In both countries, decline in labor force participation rate for men aged 60 years and over is becoming noteworthy. Pension and health are the main determinants in deciding retirement according to the principle of nature. common to both countries. In America recent rampant diffusion of Early Retirement System、adopted instead of layoffs, has brought about decline of morale among employees、and as a result caused drop in retirement age. ADEA has aimed at abolishing discrimination because of age, but has promoted early retirement instead of extending working life. In contrast to such practices, transfer to subsidiary or relevant companies has been playing an important role in procuring older wokers' employment in Japan. Ageism in the labor market and daily work may be somewhat unavoidable in any advanced countries.
