Unlike personal ?computers, which can only be used at fixed locations, smartphones are portable and can be used ?anywhere 24 hours a day, and their usage has soared accordingly. Since the beginning of 2000, both domestic and foreign studies have reported on relationship between the use of the Internet and social maladjustment as well as a possibility of reducing anxiety ?and fear of interacting with other people. Tobe, et al., for example, made clear the relationship between ?the increasing dependency of junior high school and high school students on the Internet and their ?mental health. However, there have not been enough reports on smartphone usage and mental ?health. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey on college and university students and ?found the following. First, female students spent significantly longer time on smartphones compared ?with their male counterparts. Furthermore, three out of 14 items in the coping scale and 10 out of ?30 items in the college life anxiety scale exhibited significant differences between male and female ?students. The results of our multiple regression analysis revealed that the smartphone usage of ?male students is associated with their “anxiety about job prospects”, while that of female students is ?associated with an avoidance-or escape-type coping mechanism, in which they may feel “whatever ?will be, will be”.
