Even now the word, play implies the meaning of drifting or wandering in Japanese. In ancient times, the play was ceremony in which people tried to call for spirits of the dead and to give them back to their body. “遊行” [idemas](go out) was the honorific word for departure of God or Tennoh (the Emperor). “神遊び” [kamiasobi](God's play) was a sacred festival in which God visited village communities and exchanged friendships among the people. On the other hand, when a monk was traveling and enlightening people by Buddihism, it was called “遊行” [yugyoh].
