<dc:description>The present study aims to examine national images held by Japanese undergraduates based on the stereotype content model (SCM; Fiske et al., 2002). Two hundred three Japanese undergraduates participated in the questionnaire survey. Participants rated images of 15 nations on scales of competence and warmth dimensions. They also rated the nations on scales of perceived status in politics, economics, and culture. Additionally, they rated the nations on scales of perceived cooperation in politics and economics with Japan. The content of some national images was ambivalent (“competent but cold” or “incompetent but warm”). Perceptions of status in politics, economics, and culture were positively correlated with perception of competence, and perceptions of cooperation with Japan in politics and economics were negatively correlated with perception of warmth. These results were consistent with the predictions based on SCM and suggested that SCM could explain national images held by Japanese undergraduates.</dc:description>
