It summarizes recent discussions on democratic recession and democratic resilience. It then provides an overview of discussions related to the defense of democracy. Conventional discussions have tended to focus on domestic-level efforts, but this article focuses in particular on international efforts by some governments and international organizations, and places these in the broader context of democracy support, including the promotion and defense of democracy, dividing them into actors and activities. It then examines the achievements and effects of these efforts to date, based on several case studies.
