内容記述 | The number of the Japanese-affiliated manufacturers in U.S. is estimated to reach more than 640 in the fiscal year 1987. Various studies by the leading researchers on the viability of elements of Japanese management which are applied to the Japanese companies overseas, sum up the features transferable by emphasizing so welknown items as (1) no lay-off, (2) respect for humanity, (3) management on confidence or by consensus, (4) employee involvement, etc. But thoughts on what it is like, or what it means at the basis seem to be likewise important. This article aims at clarifying the following trends in the Japanese-affiliated manufacturers in U.S., by way of arranging data and informations gathered by the author on occasion of his visit to U.S. in August, 1987, while using relevant data and comments by others. 1) Applause shown by the rank and file workers is a reaction from the worker-as -cog-approach still prevalent in many local manufacturers. The Japanese management is mainly applied to the blue-collar workers. 2) The Japanese management applied to the Japanese-affiliated manufacturers is virtually a mixture of Japanese and American management elements. It is rather to be evaluated as a creation of new management. 3) The Japanese management is a sort of fusion of West and East cultures. 4)Transfer of the Japanese management is only transfer of its essence. 5)The Japanese manufacturers are exempt from the traditional work rules and job classifications. Transfer of Japanese style production control systems has been easier, and it is what U.S. companies want to import from Japan. 6) One reason, why many Japanese manufacturers in U.S. havr attained considerable success, is attributed to its location as a small cily amidst the great plain, where the influence of trade unions is small, and its new start-up under the leadership of Japanese management. 7) Some of J.V. type manufacturers, or those bought from Americans are likely to envisage difficulties, because of lack of unity in the top management circles, and failure in handing management and labor relations. 8) The Japanese companies are warned not to under-evaluate the influence of trade unions. |
