内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Three major newspapers: Asahi, Mainichi, and Yomiuri have been surveyed from January 1982 to December 1982. Total of 2,179 articles concerning physical and mental disabilities were sampled. The articles are classified to (1) 647 articles on disabled persons and their families, (2) 466 on care services to the disabled children and persons, (3) 343 on opinions and attitudes of the public, and (4) 723 on related fields:e.g. life sciences and health hazards. The total of number of the articles decreased to about three fourth of 1981 which is the International Year of Disabled Persons.
The four categories were further subdivided for analysis. Each cell of subcategories was analyzed quantitatively.
It is observed that eighty five percent of articles have been published in morning papers. Each newspapaer published about one third of total number of articles. However this evenness does not necessary mean evenness of profile in subcategories and contents. Results are summarized as follows.
There is an obvious skewness in categories of disabilities published. Number of articles were dominated by physical disabilities, and visual and auditory disabilities followed.
So called internal disabilities rarely appeared in pages. There was a tendency to write employment of the mental retardation not from the economical point of view but from the social participation. Articles on the psychiatric disease are written in relation to medical treatment, crime, and human rights rather than in relations to public relations or social action.
On education, there are twice as many articles on integrated education as those on segregating education. Especially the Asahi is in favour of integrated education as those on segregating education. Especially the Asahi is in favour of integrated education. On employment, there were no articles concerning psychiatric disease and internal disease. It is concluded that the newspapers have a sympathy in mental retardation but have an apathy in psychiatric disease and internal disease.
Each newspaper showed marked characteristics. The Yomiuri is observed to be a newspaper of status quo and exalt to disabled persons. The Asahi is observed to be a paper of criticism of the present status and stress on participation of disabled persons. The Mainichi locates itself at about the mid point between Yomiuri and Asahi. It is commonly observed in these three newspater that disabiities are narrowly defined and profoundly disabled persons, who may not attract attentions of readers and may have no chance of participation in ordinary sense, are discarded unconsciously.
Concerning the related fields, articles on life sciences and social consciousness on the dignity of human life have been published.
