| 内容記述 | Acquiring the appropriate usage of the three forms of the conjunction "because" and distinguishing monodakara from kara and nodakara is difficult for learners of Japanese. None of the previous studies of this issue (e.g., Hashimoto, 1977 ; Kuno, 1973 ; Kuwahara, 2003 ; McGloin, 1989 ; Noda, 1995 ; Shimomura, 1988; Tanabe, 1998) compares the use of all three conjunctions or explains the difference clearly. The present paper attempts to clarify each structure's functions by analyzing Japanese discourse. Ther three conjunctions, monodakara, kara, and nodakara were examined and analyzed in terms of the following three categories : 1) cases where only one of the conjunctions is appropriate and where the other two cannot be substituted, 2) cases where either of two conjunctions could be used but where the other one cannot be substituted, and 3) cases where any one of the three conjunctions could be used. The results show that monodakara is used when the speaker wants to avoid taking responsibility or to protect him/herself. The reason given is not personal ; rather, it is acceptable for people in general. Nodakara is used when there is a conflict between speaker and hearer and the speaker wants to persuade the hearer of the validity of the reason. Finally, kara is used when giving a personal reason. The reason is not necessarily acceptable to all, but the person who gives the reason asserts that he/she is the one who takes personal responsibility for the reason. |
