In this study, the researcher formed an experimental self-help group for such mothers and investigated its effect for a period of one year. The group gathered in S city (an ordinance-designated city in Japan) once a month, which made twelve meetings in total. The average attendance each month was 3.42. The participants came not only from S City and its neighboring cities but also from far away. Popular topics included how to confess their mental health problems to their family and friends, what their own conditions were like, and how pleased they were with this sel-help group when they had no other place to discuss such things. As the mothers talked about their own situations and listened to those of others in the self-help group, they came to deepen ties with one another.
