But if they are thought, as they often are, only to give the students basic knowledge of a foreign language, it is misleading and is to be reconsidered. According to my experience as a lector of Japanology at the University of Munich, this understanding is harmful for the students' further studies in specialties. In Germany Japnology is thought to be philology, the character of which attaches more importance to the understanding of texts and their translation. But without sufficient abililty of the language and without the students' adequate transformation and reorganization of the conceptual frame in which they were raised up, understanding of another culture suffers some sort of deformation. That was what was observed in many of the students in the master course and others who had little or no experience of stay in Japan and little practical knowledge of Japanese. For the effective studies in specialties, learning a foreign language should be, in principle, not only tied up with learning of the behavior, the ways of thinking and the feeling, and the categories held by the people who speak it, but with the comparison and reogranization of the conceptual frames on the part of the learners, and that in their concrete forms.
