In particular, with regard to cases that involve little data, where the form of the ability distribution does not necessarily follow a normal distribution, using robust methods of estimation such as median and quartile deviation or Mislevy s methods of estimation such as population mean and population variance may be more appropriate than using the arithmetic mean and variance of the estimates of ability parameters.
