In particular, in Europe and the United States, attempts at “intervention” by using videos have been successful, and highly applied visual anthropology has is known as “Applied Visual Anthropology.” As if anticipating these trends, a person conducted steady fieldwork and recorded people’s lives on film before World War Ⅱ. Keizo Shibusawa, a pioneer of ethnographic film in Japan, was born as a grandson of Eiichi Shibusawa, known as the “father of Japanese capitalism.” He studied biology; he exhibited his collection of toys, folk tools, and other specimens in the attic of his house and called it the “Attic Museum.” This essay examined “another perspective” in research conducted by Keizo Shibusawa that has been commonly overlooked. First, I will discuss the early days and development of visual anthropology, which has recently been applied to solving social problems and discuss why anthropology has started the medium of video. Furthermore, I will examine the position of Shibusawa’s ethnography in history and the validity of his theory of material culture incorporated into his fieldwork. By examining the footprints of Shibusawa’s fieldwork and highlighting “another perspective” in his research, I will present a new evaluation of Shibusawa’s folklore. Drawing upon this “another perspective,” I will identify the purpose of Shibusawa’s fieldwork. Furthermore, I will examine the reasons for Shibusawa’s use of video as a medium.
