| 内容記述 | This paper examines Simply Institutional Ethnography : Creating a Sociology for People by Dorothy E. Smith and Alison I. Griffith and attempts to clarify what Institutional Ethnography(IE) is. This book is the final work of D. E. Smith, who passed away in June 2022. Although this book was co-authored with Griffith, the content of the book is such that the basic ideas of Smith’s sociology, which she had expressed in her own monographs, can be grasped. This paper is a reading of this book, relying on Smith’s discussions in her previous monographs. And this paper attempts to explain this book’s purpose. The book consists of 11 chapters, but this paper will cover chapters 1 and 2 of Part Ⅰ and up to Chapter 3 of Part Ⅱ. Two points are emphasized in the discussion. First, IE inquiry is grounded in what actual people do, in their experiences, and in the ways in which what they do is coordinated to what others do. Second, for IE, language is always inseparable from the practices of using it. Language is seen as something that people do and as an essential component of the way in which what people do is coordinated. Relying on this perspective, IE seeks to create a sociology that can “expand the scope of our knowledge of the world which we participate in but we cannot apprehend directly”. |
