内容記述 | There are many examples of abandoned railway tracks being developed as cycle paths. Most of these have been developed as roads for daily life, and there are few successful examples where they have been developed as a tourism resource. The Mahoroba Greenway, developed on the abandoned Yamagata Kotsu Takahata Line, is one of these rare examples. As a result of a study of this case from the perspective of abandoned railway line tourism and cycle tourism, the factors behind its success can be summarized in the following three points. (1) The station buildings of the former Takahata Station and the train vehicles have been preserved. Railway-related materials can be viewed at the local museum. These factors make it a highly valuable tourist resource for abandoned railway tourism. (2) The cycling road was selected as one of the ‘The 30 most friendly tree-lined boulevards in Japan’ and ‘100 New Japanese Roadside Trees’. The flat road is easy to drive on, and at 5 km one way and 10 km round trip, it is a moderate distance for a half-day tour. And there are tourist facilities in the middle of the cycle path and in the vicinity of the former Takahata station. (3) Bicycles can be rented at JR Takahata Station and Road Station Takahata, and can also be dropped off. The town and the tourist association are working to promote cycle tourism, publicizing the bike rental service, and organizing events. In other words, there is a synergistic effect of three factors: the attractive tourism resource as an abandoned railway line tourism, the attractiveness and comfort of the cycling path, and the promotional activities by the town and the tourist association. It is expected that the number of tourists using rental bicycles will increase because of growing concern for the environment and health. Expectations are high for the development of ‘cycling from station’ from JR and Road station in Takahata. |
