内容記述 | This report outlines a preliminary survey conducted in Bangkok, Thailand from August 28 to September 7, 2023. Bangkok was chosen as the research site due to the significance of religious belief for the people despite the country’s economic growth. Though many Thais practice Theravada Buddhism, they also adhere to a distinct form of Buddhism that incorporates elements of Hindu culture and other aspects of Thai culture. I conducted research on local beliefs unique to Thailand. The places I visited this time are as follows. · Wat Phra Sri Rattana satsadaram (Wat Phra Kaeo) · National Museum · Wat Paknam Phasicharoen (Wat Paknam) · Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Bangkok At Wat Phra Kaeo, we confirmed the uniqueness of Thai Buddhism with a mural painting of “Ramakien” from Hindu mythology and the worship of eight Buddha images at Wat Paknam. The Theravada Buddhists acknowledge Sakyamuni Buddha as the only one, but each day of the week is associated with a specific Buddha image. The veneration of the Buddha corresponding to one’s birthday is a distinguished element in Thai Buddhism. The substantial number of students visiting temples and worshiping the King indicated a comprehensive Buddhist education in schools. Moreover, the National Museum displays exemplify how Thai culture is deeply intertwined with both Hinduism and Buddhism, illustrating its intricate layers. Also, in Bangkok, Chinese and Indian neighborhoods also exist. Each area features Taoist and Hindu temples where immigrants worship, showcasing a religious practice deeply rooted in their daily lives. At the Sikh temple I have visited this time, we caught a glimpse of the religious practices of the Indian community in contemporary Thailand and gained insight into the diverse religious beliefs in present-day Thailand. |
