内容記述 In order to enhance religious education in contemporary Japan, it is first necessary to understand what and how "religion" is taught in school education. This paper aims to clarify how "religion" is treated in "Public," which has become a required high school subject since the 2022 school year, focusing on textbook descriptions. The materials under consideration are the National Curriculum Guideline and their explanatory documents, as well as all 13 "Public" textbooks published at the start of the subject.
National Curriculum Guideline include instructions to deal with "the fact that modern society is based on traditions, cultures, and religions" and "cultural and religious diversity". The explanatory documents explain, in addition to these points, the perspective that "religion functions as a social norm along with law, morality, etc."
A comprehensive review of the descriptions of "religion" in all textbooks revealed that most textbooks had units that collectively discussed "religion" with a focus on the "three major world religions", namely Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. In this respect, the content has not changed significantly from the preceding "Contemporary Society," with some simplification in parts. There are also many examples of "religion" being behind conflicts and terrorism, but on the other hand, careful statements that do not blame "religion" alone are also prominent.
In conclusion, it is impossible to say for certain whether "learning about religion" in high school "Public" subjects has been "enriched". However, there are some new attempts to explain the issue of the relationship between "religion and the public," bioethics and human death and life, and a comparison of national systems of religious freedom and separation of church and state, and state systems in the Islamic world, contracts and psychic commerce, and more. These are noteworthy developments that correspond to the purpose of the new "Public" subject. In them, there will be the possibility of a new "religious education".
