内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Haruki Murakami’s early short story The Rise and Fall of Tongari-Yaki (1983), written in a darkly humorous style, reflects his sense of estrangement from the Japanese literary establishment, rooted in his “peculiar experiences” during his literary debut. This work, with its allegorical and satirical nuances, poses significant challenges for translation, as evidenced by various instances of liberal adaptations, mistranslations, and omissions in Chinese and Korean versions. These translational difficulties underscore the text’s complexity, but the myriad attempts to address them also highlight interpretative insights into themes that Japanese readers themselves might struggle to articulate.
This study begins with an analysis of the original Japanese text, examining the themes and narrative techniques in Tongari-Yaki. It then delves into the translation and publication history of the work in Chinese-speaking regions and Korea, investigating the phenomena of naturalized translations and their cultural implications. A particular focus is placed on how non-existent terms like “tongari-yaki” and
“tongari-karasu” were rendered into these languages and how Murakami’s unique worldbuilding was recreated—or transformed—in the translated texts. By comparing these translated works, the study seeks to shed light on the possibilities of translation and reinterpretation.
Moreover, through an exploration of the interpretative efforts of translators who grappled with Murakami’s peculiar narrative, this paper revisits The Rise and Fall of Tongari-Yaki , aiming to uncover fresh perspectives on this enigmatic story.
