内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Institutional ethnography (IE) is a sociological method of inquiry developed and named by Canadian sociologist Dorothy E. Smith in the 1980s.
IE emerged in the North American women's movement of the 1970s. Through the women's movement, D.E. Smith discovered the daily traverse of the line of fault between the women's lives in particularities of home and children and the impersonal, extra-local relations sustained by the university. In the women's movement, D.E. Smith learned to take her experience as a woman as fundamental to how she could know the world. Viewing from the standpoint in everyday world, the objectified social relations of her academic work came into view in a new way. She understood how the institutional order of which sociology is a part is itself a product in and of people's everyday activities. And at the same time, she also understood that the order connects people trans-locally across multiple local settings.
IE sees the social not as "meaning" or "norm," but as something that occurs in the coordination of people's activities (what people do, say, write, etc.) in specific local settings and at specific times. It does not focus only on individual activities, nor does it detach the coordination as "systems" or "structures," but tries to discover the social in people's doings in the actual local settings of their lives. IE provides tools for discovering the social relations that shape the everyday world in which we live. In so doing it seeks to produce a sociological description of how our lives, through what we ourselves do in actual local settings, are hooked up the trans-local power that shapes our everyday/everynight living from the outside.
IE has matured over the past few decades and has spreaded internationally not only in sociology but also through many other fields such as nursing, education, social work, and community development planning. In this paper, we will review D.E. Smith's basic ideas about IE and some studies of North American institutional ethnographers that is based on her ideas, and consider how we can specify the social phenomena that IE refers to as "institutions" or "ruing relations".
