| 内容記述 | In order to enhance religious education in contemporary Japan, it is first necessary to understand what and how "religion" is taught in school education. This paper aims to clarify how "religion" is treated in "Geography(Chiri-Sōgō)," which has become a required high school subject since the 2022 school year, focusing on textbook descriptions. The materials under consideration are the National Curriculum Guideline and their explanatory documents, as well as all 7 "Geography" textbooks published at the start of the subject. National Curriculum Guideline include a policy for the "Geography" subject to deal with "the relationship between daily life and religious culture" as a "case study" for fostering "international understanding". The explanatory document on it addresses "religious culture" as a concrete example of the 'distinctive' and 'diverse' "lifestyles and cultures" of people around the world. Specifically, it explains the effectiveness of dealing with the connections between religious culture and aspects such as food culture, the environment, and clothing. A comprehensive review of the descriptions of "religion" in all textbooks revealed that most textbooks place considerable emphasis on the treatment of "religious culture". As stated in the National Curriculum Guideline, this represents a groundbreaking approach that directly incorporates the study of "religious culture" as an example of living culture for fostering "international understanding." The treatment of "religious culture" in textbooks included two types: one depicting the connection between religious culture and specific regions, and another providing a comprehensive description of various religious cultures. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. In conclusion, the trend toward "enrichment" in "learning about religious culture" within "Geography" is recognized. This subject will serve as an important venue for implementing "education on religious culture" in contemporary Japanese secondary education. |
