内容記述 This report aims to present challenges related to cultural heritage at tourist destinations and explore potential solutions to achieve the sustainable inheritance of traditional culture. In particular, we present fieldwork findings that focus on one traditional cultural element with the potential to become a signature tourist attraction in each location. These findings examine the potential for leveraging cultural heritage in tourism, while also highlighting challenges related to authenticity and the preservation of traditions, targeting both domestic and international tourist destinations in Japan and abroad. Regarding overseas, we focus on Balinese dance, a traditional cultural aspect of Bali, Indonesia, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Balinese dance exists in two forms: as a tourist attraction performance and as an offering dance rooted in local customs. Balinese dance is gaining global value as a tourism resource. In this context, we quantitatively clarify the difference in the consciousness of inheriting tradition between regions where dancers are paid for tourism shows and regions where they are not paid, but instead dedicated to the tradition. Furthermore, we examined authenticity by focusing on whether dance performances in tourist areas genuinely offer dances that are rooted in tradition. Domestically, we focus on Oshima Tsumugi, a traditional craft from Kagoshima Prefecture's Amami Islands. Recently, the Amami Islands were registered as a World Natural Heritage site, and efforts are underway to revitalize the local economy and society centered on tourism. On the other hand, the number of production rolls and the production value of Oshima Tsumugi have decreased to one-hundredth of their peak levels, leaving challenges for both the industry and the preservation of traditional culture. While linking preservation to tourism holds promise, this approach has not been effective. Therefore, we will examine the future direction of Oshima Tsumugi.
