However, the two expressions are used quite differently. Based on a dispute between two scholars of the Japanese language, the resent thesis is intended to show the various factors that are responsible for the difference between the two expressions. Besides the factors of meaning and register of the language itself, there are non-language factors and, especially, cultural factors which play a distinct role in making requests and expressions concerning human relationships. But in the teaching of the Japanese language, the study of culture and tradition outside the language is often reglected, which may retrard the improvement of the teaching and learning of the language in our country.
