The questionnaire survey and group interviews were conducted with the following 3 groups : university students, teachers, and welfare personnel in Japan and Sweden. The questionnaire survey found that Swedes answered positively to all of the independent questions about tolerance and multiculturalism. However, among the groups of welfare personnel and teachers in Japan answers were mostly negative and a higher level of education and high social status has not encouraged tolerance of immigrants or supported multiculturalism. In order to make an interpretation of the statistical output, follow-up group interviews were conducted in both countries.
