内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of this paper is to generalize patterns and meanings of multiple negation, a characteristic of the American Southern dialect or African American English, from examples in Forrest Gump, Tobacco Road, Sanctuary, and The Color Purple. According to the descriptions in some dictionaries and usage studies, the multiple negation is used for emphasis on negation, as is the multiple negation referred to in Fujii (1984) and Toyonaga (1998), which is a special feature of the American Southern dialect, However, there is some doubt as to this description. This is because the fairly frequent use of the multiple negation in standard spoken English seems to be different from that in the American Southern dialect or African American English, focusing on their meanings, First, the patterns of multiple negation, which seem not to have been described so far, will be generalized. Next, whether differences in meaning between standard spoken English and the American Southern dialect or African American English exist or not will be examined. By examining the examples of four fictions, it will be shown that the generalized, characteristic patterns of multiple negation are not + nothing, not + no + Noun, not + nobody, not + hardly and not + neither. It will also be shown that of these patterns, not + nothing cannot be referred to as expressions of emphasis on negation, contrary to the descriptions of several cited dictionaries and English usage studies.
