| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to examine the English on signs found in the Himeji, Hikone and Inuyama Castles, compared with that in the Matsumoto Castle, each one of them containing a castle keep designated as a National Treasure. Fukushima (2011.1) shows that some English expressions on signs in the Matsumoto Castle are different in meaning from those in Japanese. It stresses these differences in meaning cause especially serious problems in the case of historically famous constructions designated as National Treasures, considering the present time when the Japanese government stresses the importance of luring foreign tourists to Japan, and the importance of English as a global language. They especially cause serious problems for foreign learners of Japanese language, because the English signs on the same objects are normally thought to be parallel in meaning to the Japanese. This paper, following Fukushima (2011.1), setting limits to the Himeji, Hikone and Inuyama Castles, compared with the Matsumoto Castle, examines whether differences in meaning or grammatical errors, etc. on signs exist or not. It will be shown that some contradictions in meaning or grammatical errors are also found on the signs in the three castles. It also seems to be desirable (as mentioned in Fukusima (2011.1) for the authorities concerned to choose their own Japanese writer and native speaking English writer and have them closely cooperate with each other in creating the signs. |
