内容記述 | A Japanese term? a "Shimbun" defined to a Newspaper in Japan today, means "News" in Chinese language. It is told that the Shimbun originated in the Edo period; The Shogunnate happened to name the publication as a. "Shimbun", which contained the translation of the article described in the newspaper of the Dutch East Indies. Since then, a newspaper has been called as a "Shimbun". As for the legal terminology which requires a precise definition, there is one exception to this case; namely a newspaper is known as a "Shimbun-Shi"(news plus paper in Chinese language) nowadays. A newspaper is legally forced to have a clear definition under the government control period. But, under the freedom of the press in the post-war period, a newspaper has entitled to be published at any time, with any kinds, by anybody and anywhere. Therefore, it becomes somehow difficult to define easily the concept of a newspaper. Under such a circumstance, upon promoting the governmental regulatory policy against cooperated price rising, the Federal Trade Commission has designated a daily national paper as an olygopolistic line of business. At present, general daily papers are classified as national paper, bloc (or regional) paper and provincial paper in terms of distribution territories. It is a controversial issue whether the above papers be regarded as different lines of business, or not. In the post-war period, city papers published in cities except prefectural capitals have made a progressive consolidation and extension, many of which deal mainly with local news and stand in a position of sub-reading materials, compared with national , bloc and provincial papers as main reading materials. |
