| 内容記述 | As computerization continues to expand dramatically in society, it is also affecting the way we learn and teach English. While there are many benefits of using computers in the EFL classroom, there seem to be some problems cropping up that should not be overlooked. This paper focuses on one of them: students' use of translation sites on the Internet. When we input Japanese sentences into machine translation (MT) systems without considering structural differences between Japanese and English, they often output nonsensical English translation. Nevertheless, a lot of students tend to use them for their English writing assignments. If students depend on MT systems excessively, and don't try to learn to think and write by themselves, their progress in English will be hindered. This paper analyzes how college students use translation sites on the Internet, based on a survey of 279 students in June 2002. Then the efficacy of using the sites for writing in English is examined, and finally a classroom activity designed to encourage students to avoid depending on MT systems is introduced. |
