However there is no sport which appeared in more than two societies. Though some sports could have something in common with one another, they are not exactly the same. One sport appeared in one society and another sport did in another society.\n　Why did a certain sport appear in a certain society? Why did not the sport appear in the other societies? The key to solve this question is \"ethos'. Ethos is defind as \"the characteristic spirit, prevalent tone of sentiment, of a people or community\" (Oxford English Dictionary). A sence of value implicitly expressed in the rules and manners of a sport is closely akin to ethos in a society.\n　The purposes of this study were to clarify from the geographical and historical points o f view, the reason why sports have been so popular in Australia and New Zealand, and to examin a relationship between sports and ethos at colonial days in Australia and New Zealand.
