It sounds odd that just a 2,500 yen record could have the price of 25,000 yen or more. Assuming that myth and symbol of records should be factors for increasing their price, many examples are examined here. Records of Beatles are ideal examples to contemplate the relationship between the price and myth. First there are many stories about Beatles. On the other hand, there are many stories about recordings. For example, the stereo record of Please Please Me, the fi rst album of Beatles, is considered to be one of the most expensive one in history. That is because the number of press is quite low, probably less than 1,000, considering the fact that just 10 percent of Great Britain have stereo at that time. And the record is called Gold Parlophone, the gold letters printed at the black label. This design is soon disappeared as the change of label design by EMI and its rarity is highly improved. Gold Parlophone is a symbol of rarity and history. In the same context, the fi rst press of record is the symbol of rarity and history. The key to identify originals is crucial for collectors. For example, fonts, jacket, misspell, and matrix number are strong sign to make sure its time of appearance. Regarding to SGT pepper’s lonely hearts club band, so called Wide Spain is the sign of fi rst press. It is said that Paul McCartney insists on making it for looks like his favorite Jazz album. But probably because of cost problem, Wide Spine is soon disappeared from the market and the fact enhances the rarity of the record. There is a serial number on White Album indicating its time of producing. So, the serial number of 0000005 was sold at auction at incredibly high price as 0000001 was owned by John Lennon (Now, Paul declares that Ringo Starr has it now). And it is said that earlier press are better than latter in terms of recoding sound. However enthusiast of records of Beatles, it is rather a symbol rather than the fact of good sound. It is the same as in Classical music and record with myth and symbol would be bought at enormously high price.
