Although initially intended for hearing-impaired native speakers they can become a valuable aid in foreign language learning and teaching. This paper begins by discussing the theoretical basis for using captioned movies in the language classroom. The writer then describes teaching techniques which can be used to teach the four skills and cross-cultural awareness through captioned movies.
