Attending the Committee as an observer, the following is a firsthand account of the event.
This year's. Committee was particularly noteworthy, especially in Japan, in thatit was the first official world committee for the UNESCO's newly elected 8th SecretaryGeneral Koichiro Matsuura, the former Japanese Ambassador to France . A greatdeal of the international attention was directed to the fact that he was the first Secretary General to come from Asia, amid wide speculations that new lines concerningthe World Heritage would be brought forward and adopted during the week.
This report is intended to outline and review the points discussed at the Committe, and in so doing examine the issues regarding what has become a subject of increasing attention in recent years--the designation and management of World Heritage properties.},
