内容記述 Citizenship education has been one of the more prominent issues in education circles around the world at the beginning of the 21st century. European countries are no exception; they are putting considerable effort into citizenship education.
Yet even a cursory glance of just three nations in Europe, namely Germany, France and Great Britain, makes it clear that citizenship education bears the marks of their respective historical and social differences. Citizenship education comprises at the very least the fields of "political education" and "social education" in their narrowest senses. Citizenship education in Germany in particular, which is more properly called political education, focuses heavily on politics, as the term suggests.
This difference is most likely a reflection of a political agenda in Germany not held by Great Britain or France: the building of a democratic state amidst the tensions of the Cold War after the destruction of the Nazi regime. Citizenship education in its two western neighbors, on the other hand, has conventionally stressed the integration of immigrants into their respective societies. To put it another way, the problems of "we" in Germany and "others" in Britain and France have been the chief driving forces behind citizenship education.
In recent years, however, Germany's political education, being faced with the necessity of integrating immigrants and refugees into Germany as a host society, is becoming more like its counterparts in Great Britain and France, most notably in that it has come to place more emphasis on "social education". Likewise, in Great Britain and France, "political education" is gaining more attention due to a perceived need in those countries to educate immigrants -as well as their own citizens- in the skills required of members of democracies.
As the unification of Europe progresses, we are also seeing unification in terms of citizenship education.
