内容記述 This article presents a case study of Museum Practice program (Hakubutsukan Jisshu) which
aims to promote partnership between the region (i.e. Chigasaki City) and Bunkyo University Shonan
Campus. Museum Practice program is a mandatory module for undergraduate students in Japan to
obtain the museum curator qualification from their university. The new Department of International
Tourism, and Hospitality Management, Faculty of International Studies at Bunkyo University decided
to start this museum curator course from 2008 and this Museum Practice program has been running
since 2010.
In Japan, most universities which runs museum curator course send their third or fourth year
students to museums and other museum-related facilities, in order to practice their curatorial skills
and techniques on the spot. The aim of Museum Practice program is, according to the changed
Museum Act and to the guideline issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in
2009, to train students in the museum environment under the instructions from the curators. In this
way, students are expected to acquire practical curatorial skills and to deepen their understandings
towards museums. However, there has been a long debate regarding the management of this
program in both museums and in universities and those issues have not been solved yet.
From the beginning of this program, the faculties at Bunkyo University aimed to enhance students’
motivation and to raise their learning outcomes by involving regional institutions and their staff. As
a result, students had an opportunity to work with various professionals and to plan and create an
exhibition from the scratch. The exhibitions were opened to the public and not only the students,
but regional citizens and university faculties also enjoyed them and provided positive feedbacks.
Although, this new practice is at its beginning stage, this article suggests an experimental case of
how Museum Practice program can contribute to region and university partnership.
