Over the past 20 years, a massive wave of technological innovation with “digitalization” as the keyword has swept across the video field where we have seen increasingly higher resolutions (emergence of 4K and 8K broadcasts and content), greater diversification of recording media (from videotapes to various types of memory media), and more digitized or created video files, increasing diversity in photo and video recording formats, and the rapid expansion of video content delivery over the Internet with the availability of high-capacity transmission. Coming soon in the fall of 2018, 4K satellite broadcasts will begin, while outside of the broadcasting sector, 4K video streaming content delivery has already commenced. At university where students learn about video content as part of the media and communication curriculum, there is greater demand for opportunities to actually experience and learn the fundamentals of these new technologies and systems. Universities also need to provide video equipment as soon as possible in a file-based production environment that presupposes video is digitized and handled as “files” so that video files may be seamlessly produced across a network from filming to final product.
