The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between that scale and key characteristics of self-direction. Suzuki(2017)hypothesized that self-direction changes. In order to determine whether questions about changes in self-direction are associated with certain components of scales, the current study surveyed first-year college students at the end of term.\nFactor analysis of the Self-direction Scale(Asaumi, 1999)revealed 4 factors —aggressive action, self-orientation, independent decision-making, and self-expression —among college students. However, the factor curiosity was not found. Factor analysis of questions on changes identified 4 factors —renewing involvement, acquisitive involvement, absorptive involvement, and concentrated involvement.\nMultiple regression analysis was performed by the stepwise method using subscales of the Self-direction Scale as dependent variables and using 4 “changing” subscales and 6 subscales of learning motivation(Ichikawa, 2001)as independent variables. Results indicated that renewing involvement is a significant and common explanatory variable for self-direction subscales except independent decision-making.
