This study addresses the roots of such failure by analyzing Japanese English language textbooks in light of second language acquisition theory to determine whether they facilitate successful acquisition of English. While similarly analyzing French textbooks used in the United States for comparison, Japanese textbooks were found to be lacking in two areas. First, grammar presented in the books did not match the natural order with which grammar is acquired. Second, the books did not provide a large quantity and variety of input.
