The purpose of this study was to indicate how elements of human science are described in encyclopedias based on the results of a search of the National Diet Library Online in Japan. Results revealed four descriptions of human science item in Japanese print encyclopedias in the National Diet Library Tokyo Pavilion. Each description first appeared from 1958 to 1985, a period known as the encyclopedia boom in Japan.
Descriptions of human science found in recent digital encyclopedias are the same as those in printed encyclopedias. In addition, as a reference, this paper in introduced how human science is described in Japanese history encyclopedias and in digital encyclopedias that do not exist in print.
