内容記述 “This paper delves into ‘Simply Institutional Ethnography: Creating a Sociology for People’ by Dorothy E. Smith and Alison I. Griffith, aiming to elucidate the concept of Institutional Ethnography (IE). This book stands as the final testament of D. E. Smith, who passed away in June 2022 . Collaborating with Griffith, the content encapsulates the fundamental ideas of Smith’s sociology, previously expressed in her monographs. Through an examination of this book, coupled with insights drawn from Smith’s prior works, the goal is to unveil the core principles of Smith’s IE.
While the book comprises 11 chapters, this analysis concentrates on chapters 7 and 9 of Part Ⅲ . These sections explore what institutional ethnographers have found valuable in the second dialogue of IE research, constructing an ethnography from their acquired and ongoing knowledge in the first dialogue. Institutional ethnography seeks to uncover how individuals actively engage within intricate social relations that surpass their control. Part Ⅲ emphasizes the significance of texts that regulate people’s institutional actions.
Institutional texts contain formally sanctioned language, facilitating standardized verbal communication across diverse localities and timeframes. These texts provide insights into constructing institutional ethnography. In the second dialogue, which shapes IE’s ethnography, words authorized within institutions and institutional texts become pivotal. IE researchers must recognize the active role of these words in crafting ethnographies. These words serve to link ethnographers and their works to the predominant social relations they are presently exploring.”
