内容記述 | I deem it very important for the future of Japan, to ascertain the views of Asians, because they are our neighbours. As a first step, I tried to find out the attitude of Asian English-language newspapers, I selected four daily papers from two countries. These were two dailies of Indonesia ; the Indonesia Times and the Jakarta Post, and two of Thailand ; the Bangkok Post and the Nation. I also sometimes referred to one weekly, the Far Eastern Economic Review from Hongkong. This is a tentative report of my findings through these media from October 1988 to March 1989. Some of more remarkable findings are as follows ; First, the subjects which these media were most interested in were Russo-American relations and Southeast Asia. It was really impressive that these media were showing keen interest in t he dynamic diplomacy of Mr. Garbachev. Second, Southeast Asian security, especially the Khmer problem, was the subject most frequently referred to. It was really regrettable in this connection that the second Jakarata informal meeting (JIM II) could not find a way to break through the impasse of the problem. As for Japan, many things happened during this half-year. But the biggest event was the demise of Emperor Hirohito of Japan on 7 Jan. 1989, followed by the state funeral on 24 February. These media showed very ambivalent attitudes on those occasions. On the one hand, they paid respect to the Emperor as a great man who showed Japan the way to prosperity, but on the other hand, they referred to the dark memory of the Japanese occupation during the war. Those dismal days were included in his 63-year-long reign. President Soeharto of Indonesia and the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Thailand attended the state funeral. The media of these countries followed the activities of those dignitaries in Tokyo. Their editorials hoped Japan would develop new and closer relations with their countries. But one of the editerials reminded us that "some things (in the Constitution) are best left unchanged." |
