| 内容記述 | Because the Tokyo Olympic Games are to be held in 2020, more foreign tourists are expected to visit Japan. The English signs in Japan’s famous places and relics have to be increased in number and improved in quality. Fukushima (2011.1), (2011.7), (2012.7), (2013.1), (2014.1) examined the examples in the Japanese castle complexes containing castle keeps designated as national treasures or important cultural properties. Following these, this paper will examine the English on the island of Miyajima registered as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO. It will be shown that besides grammatical errors there are some contradictions between the Japanese signs or explanations and the English ones. Like the previous five papers, we will also add English actively if there are no English signs or explanations. We classify the English signs into four geographic areas, those found on the way from the Miyajima port to the Itsukushima Shrine, those in the Itsukushima Shrine, those in the Houkoku Shrine, and those found on the way from the Itsukushima Shrine to the exit of the Misen Tramway Terminal. And each one will be classified into two categories, the signs for general notices and those haracteristic of the things concerned. As to the style of the English for notices, the orthography of letters, etc. in the English signs, those of the local signs will be followed as much as possible. |
