内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Historically, science and technology have tended to be viewed in two ways: 1) as something that controls the direction that society takes, as in the case of nuclear energy, space exploration, electronics, and computerization, and 2) as something that is society directed, where society controls it and uses it so as to solve specific problems, as for example, the case of pollution. This paper discusses the second type in the context of revegetation technology, which has come into prominence recently in response to rapidly encroaching man-made environments and the disappearing of natural environments.
This paper examines aspects of and reveals interesting parallels between pollution-prevention technology and revegetation technology, both of which have been employed by society to address specific environmental problems-the former to solve problems of harmful industrial waste and automobile emission pollution, and the latter to solve barren land instability caused by the cutting of highway networks through vast areas of the environment. Despite the fact that the two technologies have no direct relationship to each other, both pollution-prevention technology and revegetation technology, over time, can be demonstrated to have gone through almost the same stages of evolution, which strongly implies that despite their differences society has come to view them in a similar fashion.
As society becomes increasingly complex in its nature and functioning, it would be wise, therefore, to regard these two technologies not merely as independent useable tools to be applied to isolated problems, but rather as inherent social factors integrated into the very life functioning of society. They must be understood as inter-linking, as in the case of zero-waste integration of industry, that is possible only when both the problem and the technology are viewed as being part of an interwoven fabric.
