内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Byron's poem "Darkness" was written in the summer of 1816, when not only had he a hard time, but also the political situation and climate condition of Europe were complicated. This summer of 1816 was really dark in Europe, and Napoleonic War had just ended in the year 1815.
In "Darkness" we can see an unusual use of the word "clay", which Byron tends to use in his poems whose theme is death. He always uses it in the meaning of material of the human body: sprits or souls of people are cooped in clay and they would be released after humans' deaths. He had the pattern idea that the clay of the dead would mingle together in a lump of clay. The idea of "clay" is not so special in Europe, but his way of using this word is special. First, in this poem, the phrase, "A lump of deaths-a chaos of hard clay", especially the word "clay", plays the role of putting the descriptions of the scenes of deaths together using one word. Second, the word is usually used with antonyms like spirit or light: but in this poem, he uses it without any antonyms. I think the reason why he does not use it with them must be related to the situation around him: the situation of the summer in 1816. I guess he deliberately avoided using the antonyms because he wanted to describe the scene without any lights: darkness.
In this poem, he puts the mask of a narrator who uses the art of the narration: the word 'clay' plays the important role of the structure of this poem; narrator's description moves from the universe to on the earth, and again to the universe meaning the darkness. The turning point from the earth to the universe depends on the word 'clay' and this is really ingenious.
I will consider about the role of the word 'clay' and point out the skill of the narrator or Byron who conceal the real feelings from the readers, us.
