This is the 2nd of two reports analyzing a questionnaire called the Questionnaire on Affective Imagery (QAI). The QAI is a list of paired words with a rating scale. The left word of each pair is the "object word" (32); self, father, mother, family, social, and so on. The right is the "affective word" (8); joy, hope, love, astonishment, sorrow, fear, anger, and disgust. Takashi Uesugi wrote six research papers as lifelong studies on the original questionnaire (1981, 1982, 1983, 1989, 1998, and 2000). We argued for the stability of the structure of affective imagery in current and former college students in the 1st report. We concluded that subjects displayed the same structure of affective imagery, even after the passage of a great deal of time, and then progressed to putting QAI to practical use. In this study, we examined the causal structure of scales about object's word weighted affective value, and the relation to personality traits, for verification and coordination with other findings.
Subjects were 77 male and 79 female students at Bunkyo University. The results of the study were, firstly, a model that the scales comprising affective imagery (positive/negative image) of the cause-object (e.g., father, mother, relatives) influenced that of the result-object (e.g., job, death, art, journey) confirmed by analysis of covariance structures. Secondly, those scales were found to be related to several personality traits in NEO-FFI (Big Five Personality Inventory).
The results demonstrated that the devised questionnaire was a useful instrument and the calculated "affective values" were a useful measure to know the levels of positive or negative affect. |
